Virtual Laser Keyboard

By Tracy Theron

The Future Has Arrived

Watching CSI the other night, I was totally amazed at this gadget shown, and my first thought was NO WAY and my next one was how can it work and I want one! Although I must admit it did make me feel quite abit older.

I know that when I was younger and my Dad would always tell me about the "good old days" I swore that I would never do that to my kids. And you guessed right I am doing that.... keep on tell my kids I am PRE-FAX, not that they understand - might as well tell them that yes I do remember the dinosaurs.

Anyway the "make you feel old" gadget that I am talking about is the Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard. This tiny device laser-projects a keyboard on any flat surface... you can then type away accompanied by simulated key click sounds.

Ok sounds incredible - I could just imagine sitting at a coffee shop and whipping out my laser keyboard - wow can you imagine the looks. But still how does this technology work?

About the size of a small cellular phone, (90 x 34 x 24 mm), the Virtual Laser Keyboard enables users to type texts or e-mails as easily as with a ordinary keyboard.

The Virtual Keyboard uses a light projection of a full-sized computer keyboard on almost any surface.

VKB's adaptable technology studies the user's finger movements to interpret and record keystrokes. Because the virtual keyboard is an image projected by light, it disappears completely when not in use.

Although I can personally see a lot of uses for this tiny gadget I am left wondering about missing the feel of pressing the key on the keyboard? But on the other hand when using the Virtual Keyboard I never ever have to worry about spilling my coffee over my keyboard again.

This gadget though did get me thinking about other keyboards, how many new models are there, and when doing my research at the virtual keyboard shop I was quite surprised on all the latest keyboards, there is even one where you can move the keys around to suit you – for gamers they say.

Technology is amazing and I really look forward to seeing what wonderful new inventions the human race can come up with.
